The West-Midlands

The West Midlands dialect is in fact a balance between the more extreme sounds from the north and the south. Again, the dialect is influenced by the Saxon people. Traces are found in the modern speech of the working-class dialects in the region. It doesn’t really differ in sound from Received Pronunciation4.

Brummie is the form of the West Midlands dialect that is spoken in Birmingham. This area is also called ‘the Black Country’, because of the air pollution by the industries that have settled there. According to an article in The Times, this form of dialect or even accent is considered to sound far less intelligent than other dialects, which have become more accepted lately15.

Jasper Carrott is a famous actor and comedian from Birmingham. I found a rather old recording where he speaks Brummie. Have fun!
